A single family house for summer vacation in western Mani, Greece.
The site, the built-up environment and the landscape were the driving forces behind the design of this summer house in western Mani. While the history of the place is directly linked by its geography, as there was a key area for the transition through the "royal road" from Messinia to Lakonia, the present day we find many pieces of local traditional architecture. Ruins of ancient fortifications and towers make up the built landscape and encounter the lushness vegetation. Lacking the aesthetically appealing features and the supposed outreach of the typical seaside destination, the area develops its own identity as a holiday destination for the locals.
Τhe building houses the lodging needs of a family during the summer, prioritizing the creation of outdoor areas.
The plot has a small extension and it is characterized by the two levels and the elevation difference between them, formed by the dry stone wall.
At its edge there was a small stone-built sample of the local traditional architecture, which was turned into the two bedroom and bathroom space, while the addition of a second rectangular volume, that rests on the traditional stone building, serves the living room & kitchen and emphasizes the contrast between the old and the new.
All private areas within the program (bedrooms, bathrooms) are concealed within the heavy exterior walls with small openings giving a sense of protection, while the shared spaces are surrounded by large openings highlighting the extroversion of the dwelling towards the outdoor spaces.
That need of extroversion and contact with the landscape has been served by creating two outdoor spaces with different conditions. An open-air dining area with BBQ was placed at the level of the courtyard. A stone ladder leads to the rooftop of the one volume revealing the sea view beyond the neighboring olive grove.
O τόπος, το κτισμένο περιβάλλον και το φυσικό τοπίο της περιοχής υπήρξαν τα σημεία αναφοράς για το σχεδιασμό της κατοικίας διακοπών. Καθώς η ιστορία της περιοχής είναι άμεσα συνδεδεμένη με τη γεωγραφία της, αφού υπήρξε περιοχή κλειδί για την μετάβαση μέσω της «βασιλικής οδού» από τη Μεσσηνία στη Λακωνία, σήμερα συναντάμε πολλά δείγματα της τοπικής παραδοσιακής αρχιτεκτονικής. Ερείπια αρχαίων οχυρώσεων και πύργοι συνθέτουν το κτισμένο τοπίο και συναντούν την πυκνή άγρια βλάστηση. Χωρίς τα αισθητικά χαρακτηριστικά και την υποτιθέμενη εξωστρέφεια του τυπικού παραθαλάσσιου προορισμού η περιοχή αναπτύσσει τη δική της ταυτότητα ως προορισμός διακοπών για τους ντόπιους.
Η κατοικία φιλοξενεί τις ανάγκες διαμονής μιας οικογένειας κατά τους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες, δίνοντας προτεραιότητα στη δημιουργία υπαίθριων χώρων.
Το οικόπεδο έχει μικρή έκταση και χαρακτηρίζεται από τα δύο επίπεδα και την μεταξύ τους υψομετρική διαφορά που διαμορφώνεται από τις ξερολιθιές.
Στην άκρη του προϋπήρχε ένα μικρό πετρόκτιστο δείγμα της τοπικής παραδοσιακής αρχιτεκτονικής, το οποίο μετατράπηκε στο χώρο διανυκτέρευσης, ενώ η προσθήκη ενός δεύτερου παραλληλόγραμμου όγκου που ακουμπάει στο παραδοσιακό πέτρινο κτίσμα και εξυπηρετεί τη διημέρευση, τονίζει την αντίθεση μεταξύ του παλιού και του νέου.
Όλοι οι ιδιωτικοί χώροι περιβάλλονται από βαριά πέτρινα τοιχώματα με μικρά ανοίγματα δίνοντας την αίσθηση της προστασίας, σε αντίθεση με τους κοινόχρηστους που περιβάλλονται από μεγάλα ανοίγματα τονίζοντας την τάση εξωστρέφειας της κατοικίας προς το τοπίο.
Η ανάγκη για επαφή με το φυσικό τοπίο εξυπηρετήθηκε με τη δημιουργία δύο εξωτερικών χώρων με διαφορετικές συνθήκες. Ένας υπαίθριος χώρος φαγητού με BBQ και τραπεζαρία τοποθετήθηκε στο επίπεδο της αυλής. Μια πετρόκτιστη σκάλα οδηγεί στο δώμα και αποκαλύπτει τη θέα προς τη θάλασσα πάνω από τον ελαιώνα.
